OWA ACtion Fund Endorses Vice President Kamala Harris as president

In a spirit of hope and with a steadfast commitment to protecting democracy and bodily autonomy across Ohio and our nation, Ohio Women’s Alliance Action Fund endorses Vice President Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States of America.

We stand behind Vice President Harris because of her promise to protect the U.S. from an abortion ban that would strip Ohioans of our hard-fought right to reproductive freedom. Families should be in charge of reproductive decisions, not the government, and access to the full spectrum of reproductive care—including abortion—is critical to preserving bodily autonomy and decreasing maternal deaths, especially among Black women.

We stand behind Vice President Harris as a Black Jamaican Indian American who will defend the democracy and liberties that drove her parents to immigrate to the U.S. decades ago—the same democracy and liberties that have been under attack by MAGA extremists since Trump’s first campaign in 2016. We must elect Vice President Harris to course correct and alleviate the damage that has been done by extremists in the Ohio legislature, the Ohio Supreme Court, the U.S. Congress and Senate, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

We stand behind Vice President Harris because she is focused on ensuring everyday people have what they need to thrive and prosper instead of lining the pockets of millionaires and billionaires who value profit over people. Trump is vowing to cut even more taxes for the top 1% wealthiest people and corporations in the country, which means ordinary Americans and small businesses will pay the price.

Ohio Women’s Alliance Action Fund does not announce this endorsement lightly or without concern about some of Vice President Harris’ actions as a career politician that are misaligned with our Reproductive Justice values. We also understand that she operates and exists in a framework that neither she nor her ancestral heritage built. Instead, she has navigated a system designed to keep us from advancing and moving forward as Black people, defeating the barriers and odds by becoming the first woman, the first Black person, and the first person of South Asian descent to serve as Vice President. We know that this is a time when we have to live in the nuance and gray area. No one politician or President is perfect and it is incumbent upon us, the People of the United States, to continue to push Vice President Harris and all politicians to be accountable to us and the needs of our communities. Throughout her campaign and presidency, we look forward to holding her accountable to the tenets of Reproductive Justice, including but not limited to full bodily autonomy, improving the country’s criminal justice system, immigration reform, and calling for an immediate end to the genocide in Palestine.

OWA Action Fund has chosen to participate in this election even though Vice President Harris’ history does not align with 100% of our values because we know that a Trump Presidency will have a devastating impact on people’s lives, especially Black and Brown people. Voting has never been and never will be the single solution to our collective liberation, which is why OWA Action Fund also engages in year-round organizing and advocacy. We each have a responsibility to do what we can to improve the conditions of our communities, including voting for Vice President Harris while also holding her accountable for actions that conflict with our vision for a world where all people are free from oppression and violence.

We have an opportunity for the first Black woman President to build something new; amplify our ancestors' lives, perspectives, dreams, and legacies; and create progress for future generations. We long for a day when we are not bound by a two-party system that does not fully represent the diverse needs, hopes, and dreams of all who live in the United States. Until then, we will do all we can to elect leaders who will move us farther along on the path of progress, and that begins with defeating Donald Trump and electing Vice President Harris as the 47th President of the United States of America.
