MLK Day 2021
Today marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a historical date of significance for freedom fighters and the Black community. Today his calls for liberation, for justice, for freedom reverberate in a country with much work to do, a country where a week ago a violent attack on our Capitol laid bare how pervasive white supremacy truly is for all the world to see. To those who say, this is not who America is, we know the truth. We know exactly who America is and has been. Dr. King knew too. That’s why he dedicated his life to the fight for justice and still, that fight continues on today. We are his successors, doing the work that he was not able to finish.
1.6.21 marked a violent attack on our country by white supremacists encouraged and incited by Trump and complicit Republicans spreading lies about an election, attempting to subvert the will of the people. This is what treason looks like: Confederate flags in our Congress, aided and abetted by law enforcement and white nationalist Republicans.
All the while, police target, detain, and kill Black people and violently repress those protesting for equal justice.
As a global pandemic ravages our country, disproportionately impacting people of color, particularly the Black community, these very same legislators who encouraged the attack, refused to wear masks when in close proximity to others during the lockdown. Since then, three of our Democratic elected have tested positive for Covid-19, further proving that Black bodies are constantly under attack.
Every elected official who incited these attacks and whose lies fueled these flames must be removed or resign. Never again can we allow any elected leader to marshal forces to attack our democracy. We demand better; we demand safety for our communities; accountability for our lawmakers; justice for Black lives. With the courage of our convictions, we can hold these supremacists to account to truly make this a country where our leaders reflect the very best of every kind of American and where liberty and justice is for all, no exceptions.
